Storytelling is one of the of the main reasons I love country music. I enjoyed listening to Tim McGraw’s recent song, “Highway Don’t Care,” so much that I looked up the music video. It’s been a long time since I have done that and was impressed with the way McGraw used his music AND the video to address and educate his audience about the dangers of texting while driving without preaching. This is impressive and we know it is extremely difficult. Our goal with SUNDIAL and THE LIGHT BRINGER’S WAY is to raise food allergy awareness by layering it within an exciting story that allows our characters to model its problems into solutions. This way, the important messages of the series (not just food allergy but making smart choices, maintaining situational awareness, paying attention to relationships) are delivered in a more meaningful way that resonate rather than repel. Way to go Tim McGraw and good job!

As a child of the 1980′s, I feel compelled to salute Baroness Thatcher for her resolute and resounding example of feminine leadership. She was often alongside our beloved President Ronald Reagan and the duo seemed to literally will the end of the Soviet empire. To boot, she always looked stylish, distinctly ladylike and in command. Talk about a positive role model for a young girl–even one across the pond.

“If you lead a country like Britain, a strong country, a country which has taken a lead in world affairs in good times and in bad, a country that is always reliable, then you have to have a touch of iron about you,” she said. As every girl and woman should. Strength is never something to be feared and should always be within your grasp. Thanks, Iron Lady. Your impact will be left on history and in the minds of women everywhere.

Hooray! We are pleased to announce we have released the updated version of The Light Bringer’s Way and there is one special reader that we would like to thank and acknowledge, Josephine Hao.

We knew we wanted to further polish our first edition of The Light Bringer’s Way, and after we read her review of Sundial on Goodreads we felt like we had found a reader who “got” what we were trying to accomplish. She wrote: “Simply fantastic! What a refreshing YA novel. There is intelligence, suspense, profound observations about life/people, in addition to the usual quirky teenage drama. Highly recommended read! Can’t wait for the sequel.”

And so we reached out to her to ask if she would be interested in helping us enhance the first edition of The Light Bringer’s Way. Remembering Jimmy V’s Cinderella Story 30 Years Later

We’re in the midst of March Madness and I can’t help but remember the 1983 NCAA Championship game when North Carolina State orchestrated one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. Their coach was the great Jimmy Valvano (and hero from my hometown of Seaford, New York) and his inspirational “Never Give Up” speech he gave at the ESPY Awards two months before he died from cancer is a motivational reminder to all of us to live life to it’s fullest and never stop dreaming. Being labeled the underdog doesn’t mean anything when you have belief, dedication and drive–just ask anyone from the 1983 North Carolina State championship team and remember his words of wisdom the next time you ask yourself if you can tackle the task in front of you.

JMU Professor Robert Sullivan: Making Life Easier For Everyone

When I was at JMU, I took several of Robert Sullivan’s classes as electives. He shared my fascination for logistical organization and planning and I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to have learned from Harrisonburg’s City Planner of 26 years. I read he passed away last month and as I signed the funeral home guest book, I thought about all that Robert Sullivan gave to the community and to students. He transformed Harrisonburg from a sleepy small town into a growing University city and gave us plenty of real life experience to think about and learn from. But, most of all, I always left his class with a smile on my face because he wanted us to enjoy the subject matter as much as he did. That is what great teachers do–they share with you the passion they have for the subject matter and you find yourself appreciating your own life in a new way. Next time I drive through Harrisonburg, I will think of Mr. Sullivan and quietly thank him for making it easier for all of us to get around.
